WACT approached Plastecowood for a cost-effective, long-lasting, sustainable and eco-friendly solution for various projects on their attractive canal network. With a requirement for boardwalks, bridges, revetments, retaining walls, tow-paths, and seating for social activities, fencing and decking platforms, Smartawood is an ideal resource.
The environmental and practical benefits of Plastecowood’s Smartawood product including longevity, strength, low slip risk, non-leaching, and no absorption of water mean it’s an ideal product for permanently wet environments making Smartawood a natural choice for these kinds of application.
The photos demonstrate our 3400mm length 150mm diameter and 95mm diameter posts being driven into the floor of the canal by rammer attachment on a 360 digger with 150 x 50 x 3400 beams secured to provide lifelong fendering to protect the banks from erosion due to contact from narrow boats and barges.
It’s a really professional finish installed mainly by volunteers. Looks great – and is unlikely to need to be revisited for repair or rental or maintenance for the foreseeable future.
Looks great – and no felled trees required for the project.
Environmental credentials of this project:
- Saves 1400kgs of carbon from landfill or incineration
- Saves 5 trees being cut down
- Reprocesses at least 50,00 single use waste plastic packages.
“Initial feedback is very positive. From the use of Plastecowood on the one job so far completed, once we got used to the characteristics and the best ways of securing it proved no more difficult than the traditional timber equivalent with the added benefit of longevity.
From the observations of the public again comments were positive, both on the visual front and more especially that we were using a product that was more environmentally friendly, a big plus when working on a restoration project such as this.”
